Tips
for Writing and Formatting a Scannable Resume
that a Computer Can Read
When
you prepare your resume, it should be in a format that is "scannable."
By using our document imaging technology, we can scan your resume into
our computer system. Then the system can search for key words in your
resume and quickly match your qualifications with available positions.
You may be considered for jobs you never even thought of! The computer
also keeps your resume on file so it's quicker to update your information.
Here
are some tips for preparing a scannable resume:
Format:
- Use white 8 ˝
x 11 paper, one side only, black ink
- Provide a clear
printed original, no copies
- Use standard
typeface and font size of 12 to 14 points
- Do not use italics,
underline, shadows, reverses, boxes, pictures or other fancy graphics
that the computer may not correctly read
- You can use
bold type or all caps for section headings if letters do not touch
each other
- Make the maximum
length 2 pages
- Place your name
at the top of each page with your address below your name; include
your email address
Content:
- Use standard
headings such as Objective, Experience, Employment, Work History,
Positions Held, Skills, Education, References, etc.
- Use concrete,
active words to describe your experience. Say "managed a team of graphic
designers" rather than "responsible for managing…"
- Use language
specific to your industry. Use buzzwords and professional jargon that
is appropriate to the job you are seeking because the computer will
pick these out. (For instance, a candidate for a nursing position
might use words like acute care, infusion therapy, etc in his/her
resume.) Using good keywords can increase your chance of a match.
- List the names
of software you use, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
- Use complete
school names, degree and dates
- Use complete
job information and dates
- If there's enough
space, describe your personal traits and attitude, using key words
such as dependable, high energy, enthusiastic, etc.
